Toni Brell @ Albe
Toni Brell works at the intersection of installation, performance, and sound. Like a set-builder, they create complex landscapes that are meant to be approached from different angles. Drawing inspiration from ASMR and Foley practices, many of the sculptures they create emit sounds through touch and are often linked to gestures, rhythms, and shared rituals. Inviting activation, the audience may become active participants – characters in a narrative that unfolds.
At the residency in Albe, Brell is developing a new body of work that engages with the tactile and emotional textures of the sonic environment. The project unfolds across several strands. It begins with the development of ceramic instruments that Brell explores as affective devices – prototypes for listening and sounding differently, or listening otherwise.
Alongside this, Brell is working on a sound and video piece that takes the sensory and social landscape of Albe as its starting point. The work investigates how sound is entangled with care, vulnerability, and the politics of perception. Through close attention to surfaces, gestures, and the acoustics of proximity, Brell seeks to reclaim the sonic sphere as a shared and affectively charged space – one that can hold more than speech, and where listening becomes a form of relation.
