Stephan Blumenschein
Stephan Blumenschein is a visual artist based in Amsterdam. In his practice he looks at the histories, ideologies and fantasies surrounding institutional spaces. He does so by thinking through the relations of spaces/rooms within buildings as well as their outside. (Re)performing social hierarchies constellations of spaces form the framework for where and how (in)visibility and participation is produced and granted to whom. Who and what is seen, is heard, is considered valuable and inspiring? In the last years his research has unfolded along the intersection of anxiety, (institutional) mental health care and architecture. Taking shape as architectural interventions, sculptural installations, sound pieces, writing and image collages his works reveal itself in the relational, in the movement between things, between spaces, between thoughts and around productive gaps which invite the audience into the artist’s universe.
Since 2024 Blumenschein is artist-in-residence at mental health crises center Mentrum/Amsterdam where he facilitates monthly listening sessions of records picked by its inhabitants.
Stephan works and lives temporarily in Ixelles and Museum Dr. Guislain Ghent where he has full access to their archives.
