Jitse Huysmans-KAOS/workspacebrussels

This season, KAOS and workspacebrussels are again organising 3 residencies together. Jitse Huysmans gets to kick off this year's residencies.

Jitse Huysmans' research focuses on the theme of regret and sharing stories. Regret often seems linked to the past; it occupies mental space and takes people out of the now. But can sharing stories bring movement towards acceptance? Can being heard and seen help?

From personal experiences, Huysmans' desire grew to explore how regret can be transformed. This led to the idea of ‘experience booths’: spaces where visitors can listen to (audio) stories about regret and respond to them creatively (with a word, drawing or note). The narrator can return later to see how his or her story has touched others. This interaction creates a dialogue that can engage both narrator and listener.

More than an installation, SPIJT is an invitation to pause. It is a plea for connection through stories-an attempt to embrace vulnerability rather than avoid it. As a seemingly static entity, can regret be transformed and set in motion through interaction?

The research is driven by a passion for the power of care and vulnerability. As an artist, listening is central, as is creating connection through shared stories. The residency at KAOS is the first step in this process-oriented research.
