About the Program
From 2025 KAOS and UPC KU Leuven will jointly organise one annual research residency for individual artists within a psychiatric context. The invited artist will have access to a personal work studio on the premises of UPC KU Leuven.
KAOS develops art projects with artists who may or may not have a psychiatric vulnerability. It brings art and psychiatry together and thus tells something about perceptions about them.
KAOS is for the arts and against the stigma that rests on people with mental vulnerability.
The basis of our activities are artist residencies in psychiatry or a referring context.
Together with the artist, the residencies are linked to public talks and debates, the so-called KAOS Talks, in addition to presentations, concerts and publications. Moreover, regularly we plan an exhibition in which we present work by residents and artists (with or without mental vulnerability) from our broad network: the KAOS Expo.
UPC KU Leuven offers quality care for emotional, psychological or psychiatric problems. Housed in several campuses and departments, they offer a wide range of residential and outpatient care. The artist residency is established at the Kortenberg Campus.
The research residency is intended for artists who want to conduct their own research in the specific context of a psychiatric care centre. You delve into themes that manifest themselves here and translate them into an artistic project. During your stay, you will share your research with staff and patients of the UPC KU Leuven. The focus here is on developing and deepening your own artistic practice.
For whom?
The residency is open to individual visual artists who may or may not have a mental vulnerability themselves. We ask candidates to motivate why they consider a research residency important in this context and what the link is to their own work. We also ask them to draw up a schedule for the anticipated period (between mid-January and the end of June 2025). This will be determined in together after the selection. The selection of artistic proposals is done by the artistic teams of KAOS and UPC KU Leuven.
