Julien Carpentier

Julien Carpentier works in October and December at KAOS in Brussels. This residency is a collaboration with workspacebrussels.

Born in 1995 in Douai (FR), and graduated in 2018 from Villa Arson (Nice, FR), Julien Carpentier lives and works in Marseille where he is currently in residence at Les Ateliers de la Ville. With a transdisciplinary approach, he develops performances and collaborative, co-creation projects that often take place outside the usual institutional channels for contemporary art. Together, he creates fictions, objects and costumes, noises and ephemeral parades.  For Julien Carpentier, play on words are narrative and visual drivers - he considers spoken and written words, onomatopoeias, code-switching, slang and dialects, "patois", equally - everything that makes up language, everything that puts our tongues in motion. In his narratives, he assembles, twist and exaggerate: he constructs critical collages and excessive attitudes; this is how he tackles postures that are deemed aggressive or oppressive. With humour, self-mockery and melancholy from time to time.

He’s involved in Lonely Life Lovers Club collective since its creation, with which he develops projects to make sound and listening practices more inclusive, as well as a music label designed as a cooperative production unit. He is also part of the poetry group Souci du Drame.

In 2025, he took part in the Carnaval de la forêt, Fraize (FR) following a residency at Ateliers Faires, created the Aski-Paré*e*s parade in Forcalquier (FR) with FRAC Sud, participated to the Transatprogram of Ateliers Médicis and is currently working on a performance project, Vint' d'Osier, with the support of the Fondation des Artistes (Paris), Artconnexion (Lille), and Le Boson (Brussels).
