Open call residence d’artiste 2025 KAOS/Yellow Art
About the Program
Next season (‘25-‘26) KAOS and kunsthuis Yellow Art jointly organize two research residencies for individual artists within a psychiatric context. Invited artists will have access to a personal workspace in the Jan Hoet House. Additionally, the kunsthuis Yellow Art studio will be open three days a week for use and interaction, with other facilities available on the premises such as the open house 't Vooruitzicht. Please note: There is no accommodation available on site.
KAOS develops art projects with artists who may or may not have a psychological vulnerability. It brings art and psychiatry together, telling something about the perception about it.
KAOS is for art and against the stigma that rests on people with mental vulnerability.
The basis of our operation is artist residencies in psychiatry or a referring context. In consultation with the artist, content-related public talks and debates are organised, the so-called KAOS Talks, in addition to presentations concerts and publications. Furthermore, every working year we plan an exhibition in which we present the work of residents and artists (with or without mental vulnerability) from our broad network: the KAOS Expo.
Kunsthuis Yellow Art is an artistic studio for people with a mental vulnerability. It is a safe space for interaction and imagination. Weekly, around thirty participants work on their own artistic oeuvre. Additionally, artistic interchanges are organized with fellow artists. Kunsthuis Yellow Art has extensive experience in co-creation from a position of equality. Since its start, professional artists have been actively collaborating with participants to create artwork. This open call is organized in line with this tradition.
Kunsthuis Yellow Art art is not only locally anchored but also enjoys international recognition due to its exceptional nature. It works cross-sectoral and extends a hand to other stakeholders in healthcare, education, or heritage.
Kunsthuis Yellow Art is located on the boundaries of the Open Psychiatric Care Center in Geel. From this strategic position—on the border between psychiatry and society—a lead is taken to break social paradigms and discuss mental vulnerability through art.
The Jan Hoet House was named after former curator and "art pope" Jan Hoet, who grew up in this house and returned throughout his life. It is a stately doctor's villa on the edge of the OPC campus, literally on the border between psychiatry and society. In 2006, the workshop activities of kunsthuis Yellow Art began here, and later, various exhibitions took place, including 'Middle Gate ’13' and Tageldimde (2023). The Jan Hoet House acts as an extension of kunsthuis Yellow Art, between which a reciprocal, dynamic movement takes place. In addition to this bilateral connection, there is also an outward flow.
The research residency is intended for artists who want to conduct their own research in the specific context of a psychiatric care center. You delve into themes that manifest here and translate them into an artistic project. During your stay, you share your research with kunsthuis Yellow Art and its participants. The focus here is on the development and deepening of your artistic practice.
For Whom?
The residency is open to individual visual artists who may or may not have a mental vulnerability. We ask candidates to explain why they consider a research residency in this context important and what the link is to their own work. Additionally, we request a proposed schedule for the intended period (September-November 2025), which will be determined in consultation after selection. The selection of artistic proposals is made by the artistic teams of KAOS and kunsthuis Yellow Art
Conditions
An artist fee will be provided. Additionally, there is a small production and transportation budget provided. Bi-weekly feedback sessions with the artistic teams of KAOS and Yellow Art art house will be conducted.
